Formed in 2002 by Veronika Jaruškova, the Pavel Haas Quartet takes its name from the little-known 20th century Czech composer Pavel Haas whose promising talent was cut short in Auschwitz in 1944. With wins in both the Paolo Borciani Competition in Italy and the Prague Spring Competition, these current BBC New Generation Artists have performed in the world’s most prestigious concert halls, receiving great acclaim from audiences and critics alike. Beyond its concert performances the Quartet enjoys an enviable reputation for its recordings. The Quartet’s first CD was voted one of the ‘CDs of 2006’ by London’s Daily Telegraph, ‘CD of the Week’ by BBC Radio 3 and ‘Chamber Choice’ by BBC Music Magazine. With intense pride in its Czech heritage the Quartet champions the music of Czech composers, being especially noted for its interpretation of Dvorák’s quartets. This is the Quartet’s second concert for Musica Viva Tasmania, following its acclaimed and electrifying season-closing performance in 2008. * Commissioned for Musica Viva Australia by Kim Williams AM. Tasmanian premiere performance. |
