Take an evening stroll through the streets of Cambridge and you will be treated to a feast of choral music from the University town’s many college choirs. Founded in 1546 by Henry VIII, Trinity College is steeped in choral history and its choir rates as one of the finest, and most famous, mixed-voice choirs in the UK. The choir’s thirty members are all undergraduate students, combining studies across many disciplines with responsibilities as choral scholars in the over six-hundred-year-old choir. Despite this centuries-old tradition the choir embraces repertoire from medieval to contemporary in its first Australian concert tour, showcasing works in the English choral tradition alongside the intensely spiritual music of contemporary Baltic composers. In the spirit of Musica Viva Tasmania’s 2010 world of music theme, the choir takes the audience on a tantalising tour through the Northern latitudes before embracing the music of the antipodes, performing a new choral work by 2010 Musica Viva Australia Featured Composer Paul Stanhope. Jointly presented by the Theatre Royal.. |
